Newton-le-Willows 17 v Leigh 22

Leigh Win in the Wet

Trys Scorers - Andy Shelley, Tom Boughey

Goals - Mike Davies, Andy Shelley x2

In a unseasonal wet night in the height of summer the first run out of the season ends in defeat, however this match was not about the result it was about getting miles in the legs and the performance.

Leigh started the stronger camping out in the Newton 22 however they were turned away with some excellent defence and scramble from all of the Newton players. Unfortunately Newton were making fair to many errors and giving away penalties, Leigh finally crashed over to take the lead on the stroke of a 1/4 time. 2nd quarter was a reverse of the 1st and Newton finally made some head way, spending time in Leighs 22, finally resulting in Andy Shelley crashing himself over for the try.

2nd Half kicked off and the game was at somewhat of a stalemate with lots of errors and penalties, Newton broke the stalemate with a kick down field, an excellent chase by Jordon Billings on his debut , kicked the ball on and regained took contact and popped up to Tom Boughey to score in the corner. A further penalty took the lead further out. The 4th quarter saw Leigh take advantage of some fatigue and scored 3 further times to take the win in the wet.

Coach Roberts - "Im incredible proud of the lads tonight. Starting with 4 subs and ending with 1, against a Leigh side that is a league above and with 25+ lads. To defend and stick in the game as long as they did was fantastic. Things to work on for sure but a great start."

Wallasey RUFC 41 vs Newton RUFC 14

Wallasey Take out the win

Try Scorers - ALan Callister, Andy Shelley

Goals - Jacob Turner x2

Newton had named a strong squad to finally take the field in 24/25 season unfortunately on the eve of the game 5 players had to drop out for various reasons, which meant newton went in to the game without a recognised winger and playing 5 centres in the back line.

Even with the changes enforced Newton were confident coming in to the game having had a good recent record over Wallasey. Maybe this affected the attitude as Newton started slow and Wallasey taking an early lead, a lead they expanded on going in to the half time break.

In the second half Newtons frustrations were clear with decisions rightly or wrongly not going their way. This resulted in 3 yellow cards with one turning in to a red as it was the same player. The first of which was Daniel Reilly for foul play on the floor, 2nd was Kyle Crook on debut for a high tackle, who upon his return to the field was handed a 2nd persoanal yellow and a 3rd for Newton meaning it was a red card on debut for Kyle.

In-between the cards there were some positives for Newton with Al Callister running a good line from 40 out, making a break with good footwork, taking on the fullback and scoring next to the sticks and Andy Shelley getting the ball wide and making a break to finish off one of the few great plays from Newton to score under the sticks.

Coach Robert focused on the positives after the game stating " this wasn't the start we were looking for however there are positives to take out of the game. Our scrum was fantastic today and never looked in danger whilst piling the pressure on wallasey. We also handed debuts to 3 players. We will train hard this week and go again next week"

The DR roofing MOM was Andy Shelley.

Newton RUFC 19 vs Ellesmere Port 29

Port get the win

Try Scorers - James Jones, Chris Hallard, Pen Try

Goals - Si Lawson

Newton named a much changed team once more due to unavailability and injuries. After the kick off were under pressure but held out for a good while, maybe riding their look, however Ellesmere Port took the lead after 10 minutes. Newton then clicked in to gear and after a strong kicking game pinned Port in the 22 and scored from a resulting line out.

Newton continued to apply pressure and with penalties mounting the referee finally had enough and awarded a Penalty try and a yellow card. Newton took advantage of the extra man and barged over once more to take the score to 19 -7 at the break.

Halftime gave Port a chance to regroup with them coming out in the second half to score a try to take the game back to 19-12. A yellow card for Newton saw Port draw level and it was game on.

After Newton returned to  15 players they were soon back down to 14 after swinging arm a red card was given.

The extra man proved to much for Newton and with legs getting heavy Port took their chances and took out the win 19-29

The DR roofing MOM was Kyle Crook.

Newton RUFC 31 vs Birchfield 47

Disappointment in the Wez Turner Memorial

Try Scorers - John Stafford, Al Callister, Jacob Turner x2, Daniel Reilly

Goals - Jacob Turner, Si Lawson x2

In an emotional day while Newton celebrate the life of Wez Turner it was Birchfield that started the game strongest opening the scoring in what turn in to a very attack dominated day.

Birchfield took advantage of lacklustre defence early on and extended their lead. Newton finally kicked in to gear after a break and scored in the corner. Birchfield continued their attacking form continuing to add to their totals. Newton did come with in 7 of Birchfield with a try from Jacob Turner but with further mistakes from Newton, Birchfield were able to keep their part of the scoreboard ticking. This was helped with a yellow card to Al Callister with 60 minutes gone. Daniel Reilly added to newtons score before collecting a yellow himself on 70 minutes, in what turn out to be a swap for the retuning Callister. Final scores from Jacob Turner and Al Callister finished the scoring for Newton but Birchfield were never stopped themselves with facing 14 for the last 20 minutes of the match and took out the win.

Coach Roberts said he was "disappointed in the defensive performance, shipping in nearly 50 points is never going to get you a win however we have proved when we put it together we can also score points."

The DR roofing MOM was Al Callister.

Crosby St Mary's 19 vs Newton RUFC 19

Newton cant hang on, but progress in the cup

Try Scorers -Si Lawson x 2, Stu Birch

Goals - Stu Birch x 2

With the match being a double header for the cup and league there was a lot at stake for both teams.

With the strong winds hammering the pitch, as is normal at St Mary's due to the  exposed pitch, both team wanted to start with the wind at their backs and it was Crosby that got their wish and took advantage early on with scoring in the corner.

This seem to click Newton in gear who started to play some rugby they knew they could. A fantastic move saw Si Lawson make a break and score, with the wind still swirling Stu Birch just managed to convert for Newton to take the lead.

Newton then scored again with a scrum play putting Massey in space to offload to Lawson to score again, birch converting once more.

The final try of the half came from some good back play which saw breaks be made and good support play and Birch crashed over once more to increase the advantage. Halftime Newton led 19-5.

Second half should have seen newton take advantage of the weather conditions however Newton did not see any of the ball to capitalise. Crosby pushed and push and Newton responded with stern defence however the dam finally broke with fatigue set in. This trend continues and as not helped wil a yellow card for Crook after a team warning. More possession and more fatigue saw Crosby score a crash over try to level the score.

League points were shared but as Newton were the away team they progress in the cup.

The DR roofing MOM was awarded to the team.

Capenhurst 5 vs Newton RUFC 15

Newton Get the job done

Try Scorers -Kyle Carter, Andy McKenna, Jacob Turner

Goals

Newton seen this game as a chance to kick start the season however it was Cap that started the strongest. From the kick off , they recycled well and after a few phases opened the scoring.

It took Newton a little time to get in to the game, with the ref adding extended breaks for stoppages it was hard to get any flow going. A kick over the top final got newton on the board, with a mix up at the back allowing Carter to ground the ball. The extras could not be added.

The game then got spicy with a multitude of scuffles. Capenhurst were clearly rattled however they were  given a shot in the arm when Crook was sent to the bin after a team warning.

Newton stuff to the defensive task and an interception saw Mckenna crass for the last score of the half.

2nd half continued in the same spicy nature with 2 more card for ill discipline to Callister and Hallard. It was the latter who finally provided the decisive break from the base of the scrum to send Turner over to wrap up the win

The DR roofing MOM was And Mckenna.
